" Beyond Digital Natives "

Chapter 10
Young Children, Digital Technology, and Interaction with Text
By: Rachael Levy

Quote ~ While it is clear that many young children are indeed competent users of such texts, this study indicates that there can be substantial variance in the ways in which young children interact with technologies across the boundaries of home and school setting.

After reading chapter 10, I can say that I agree with my quote. For young people to be successful with technology at home and in school we have to consider several things. Does the student have internet. Is there access to a computer at home and if so what types of programs does he/she have that are compatible to what is being used at school. If there is none, is there access to a place where a student can go to achieve technology access.

This where community and school can collaborate to provide access for students who need the technology support. Studies by (Wohlwend, 2009) indicates that schools need to find ways in which to not only include technology in the classroom, but to actively build on the skills and strategies that young children develop in their homes in order to make sense of digital texts, and develop aspects of digital wisdom.

Chapter 11
Intellectual Field Or Faith Based Religion
Moving on From the Idea of “Digital Natives”
By: Sue Bennett and Karl Maton

Quote ~ Among the host of claims made about young people in relation to technology, the most widespread stem from Prensky’s (2001) article in which he describes young people as “Digital Natives” who are immersed in the world of digital technology and compares them to older “Digital Immigrants”
Who struggle to adapt to this brave new world.

I agree with Prensky in his claims of how the Digital Native and the Digital Immigrants both are using technology in different ways. The Digital Natives tend to be more active because they invest time into their social media communities. I say communities because they use more than one social media site for socializing, shopping, and communicating. The Digital Natives are also very fluent when it comes to playing video games online they can create virtual worlds, play globally and multitask with many tools.

Which brings me to The Digital Immigrant this group is more involved with Facebook, HGTV, Pinterest and sites that are more informative. They have a social network with family friends but not as intense like the Digital Natives. My opinion is that as technology continues to grow and change the Digital Immigrant will have to make more effort to learn and understand how to properly use technology.

Chapter 12
Reclaiming An Awkward Term
What We Might Learn from “Digital Natives”
By: john Palfrey and Urs Gasser

Quote ~ There is no extent to which one could say all youth of recent generations use technology in advanced ways. It is also not the case that those of us who are older use technology in ways identical to one another, or in ways more naïve than those of children.

I agree with this statement, we all use technology in more ways than one. Taking into account our interest will determine what resources we search for when it comes to the tools we use. For example some students really like sharing their pictures on Instagram while others like to instantly post their pictures on snapchat. The Digital Migrants might prefer Facebook to share pictures or maybe even shuttle fly and Flickr.
