Digital Native Stand Along Presentation

What I would like people to know about Digital Natives is that they are not so intimidating. As education continues to evolve in the areas of Digital Media and Digital Literacy it is important that teachers, students and administration work together to achieve what is in the best interest for our students as we go forward into 21st Century of technology and education. Technology has and will continue to transform the world around us. American education, too, can evolve to better prepare students to navigate that world. As technology continues to advance and become more accessible around the world, experts who study how children learn are developing fresh paradigms designed to reach the new generation of students dubbed “digital natives.” This term emerged in 2001 from the work of Mark Prensky, a thought leader, speaker, writer, consultant, and game designer in the field of education and learning. According to Prensky, digital natives are the young people growing up in the digital world. They cut their teeth on tech gadgets, smart phones, and the Internet and can’t conceive of a life without technology. And, for those of us Digital immigrants who grew up prior to the tech boom and have taken pains to adapt to e-mail, Facebook, Web surfing, and entertainment on demand. There is still hope for us yet, According to (Thomas, 2011) technology alone will not replace intuition, good judgement, problem solving abilities, and clear moral compass. That can be achieved without experience.

  1. Your paragraph explaining what you want people to know about digital natives is spot on. I think that it really takes what the book was telling us and your presentation goes along nicely with those same concepts.

Technically, I am a digital native, but I don’t really like that term for myself because I’m not always up to date on the latest technologies. I don’t know about them and some of them I don’t care to know. Just in the short month that we have been in this class, I have learned how to use several new technologies that I didn’t even know existed! So I definitely agree that age is just a number and doesn’t label you as a digital native or a digital immigrant.

As far as your presentation goes, I liked it and I think that we had similar ideas. The slides are easy to read and their pictures go well with the text. (The only exception was slide 19 & 20. They were just small and I couldn’t enlarge them to read the comic and the diagram).

I think that someone with no knowledge of whom or what a digital native is could watch this and get a good idea. Nice job!

  2. I liked the way your presentation flowed. The music was a little on the sad side which made it the presentation seem less interesting. At times it was hard to find where the text I needed to read was, but never more than 5-10 seconds. I thought the pictures went very well with the words and they followed the book well. The only thing that really threw me off was when some letters in the text were different colors than the rest. I'm not sure why, but I was personally not a fan.

    1. Sean thanks for your comment, I had no text other than the five words I used with my image the tiny small text was the picture citation. The different color text was just creative art.

  3. I really liked your presentation. I liked the music you chose. I chose slower music for mine as well. I find that it makes it more powerful and doesn't take away from the images and text. I thought that your slides flowed really well, but some of the font on some slides were hard to read or too small. I also really liked the slide "Digital Native born to be wired." I thought that was a very powerful quote.

    1. Ashley thanks you for your comments I like the slower pace music because as you said it did not take away from the images, The text at the bottom of the pictures was just my image citation.
